Located in Charlotte USA, the Davidson College Wildcats Arena is home to men and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling. The impressive space seats almost 5,300 people – and the sound needs to be crystal clear for every one of them. They approached EDC to provide them with impactful audio solutions to ensure perfect results, game after game.
Belk arena is a multi-sport, multi-level facility – meaning it is highly reverberant space. Control over the speaker pattern was imperative for the client, along with having the ability to minimize speaker hangs to lower the ambience.
Problems
When the athletics department at Davidson University needed to upgrade Belk Arena, they wanted something state of the art. They had a major problem with stadium acoustics that acoustic treatments alone could not address in such a large and reverberant space.
Solutions
Clarity selected the SQ90 loudspeakers from EDC Acoustics – the most sophisticated speakers on the market. They can be carefully controlled to create 3D wavefronts, essentially allowing the system to create the perfect wavefront shape to fit the shape of the space. In other words, the sound is focused on the spectators, not the walls.
Outcome
From the equipment listed, we were able to achieve full coverage with an efficient install allowing us to significantly improve the audience experience across the entire venue. From the same set of speakers, we can turn the upper bowl on and off by controlling different beam patterns. Even at the proof-of-concept demonstration it was so apparent that people were in disbelief of what the speakers could do.
